Forest of Reading Awards Ceremony

Last week, the Junior Room and Primary Room students traveled to the Habourfront to attend the Forest of Reading Awards Ceremony. The children participated in the voting process last month and had to read a certain number of books in their program to be eligible to vote. Yoan was selected to introduce the author of one of his favourite books! The students all had a great time!

The Results are in!

Olivet New Church School has been voted best private school in Etobicoke! Our school has been awarded the gold from the TCN Readers' Choice Awards. This is the third time in the last three years that Olivet has taken home a Readers' Choice Award.

The letter of the week is “Uu” for unusual animals!

On April 13, Creature Quest came to Olivet to provide an interactive animal experience. Our Playschool and Kindergarten students had an opportunity to view, learn, touch and ask questions about a variety of animals. Our animal visitors included the following; Amphibians (frog, salamander), Arthropods (crab, millipede), Mammal (rabbit) and Reptiles (snake, lizard, turtle). Our brave and willing students demonstrated patience, respect and curiosity as each species was introduced by our presenters.

We travelled the globe learning interesting facts on habitat, species characteristics, and diet before we had an opportunity to hold or touch each animal. Our presenter fed meal worms to the box turtle and salamander... with a few exclamations of wow and yuk!

The class favourites were; Super Bunny Burger King for softness, Dr. Jeckles the Halloween Crab for ticklish legs, and Freckles the Hog Nosed Snake for a tight squeeze, and Hinge the Eastern Box Turtle for snapping up the meal worm!

Earth Day

On April 22 the grades 1 through 4 went out and picked up all the garbage that was lying around the school and manse properties. There sure was a lot of it!!

PLayschool Follows the Easter Story

Our preschoolers have been hearing the Easter Story daily during our worship circle time. Playschool children have affection for the Lord's Word and for their involvement in setting the stage for worship. Each week a child helps to dim the lights, "light" our battery operated candle and open the Bible. Then we hear our Bible story for the day, sing songs reflecting the passage and often participate in role play taking turns to be each "character" in the passage.


We had several role playing highlights. Our first, Palm Sunday's lesson when we joined the Kindergarten class to re-enact Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Children waved palm branches, lay clothing items down in front of our moving donkey, while singing Hosanna. Each child had an opportunity to ride the donkey as Jesus would have done. Playschool also role played the Last Supper, together drinking grape juice and eating unleavened bread. We recited our Playschool grace, "Our hands we fold, our heads we bow, for food and drink we thank God now. Amen." Our final opportunity to role play came when the women found the tomb empty, the guards struck down and the Angel of the Lord telling them to go out and tell others that Jesus has risen. Playschool loves to sing "Allelu, Allelu, Praise ye the Lord!" crouching and leaping up at the appropriate moments.

And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it at all. " And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands upon them.

Grades 1 and 2 Learn About Water

We put up this bulletin board during our water unit. The rainbow fish turned out very well. Miss Moir helped the students with that project. We also learned about the aspects of water. The children did experiments about sinking and floating and followed up by drawing things that would float or sink and putting them on the appropriate place on the board.

In the Library

Last month, the students of Grades 1 through 4 enjoyed listening to a Christmas Story in the library with Mrs. Pulpan.

The portable, a longtime familiar structure at Olivet, was removed on January 6, 2010.

The Doctor is in!

This week at Playschool, our children became doctors, nurses, hygienists, receptionists, parents and patients. The classroom setting supported a reception desk, waiting room, exam rooms for medical, dental and veterinarian doctors.

Through the use of our “props” in the classroom our preschoolers recreate their experiences and knowledge about doctors. For many children they can re-experience situations, learn from others and share what they know and have experienced.

Dramatic play contributes to the development of the whole child. Its value in language, emergent literacy, social interaction, emotional well being, mathematical skills and creativity is remarkable and just plain fun. Playschool loves dramatic play!
