Tots' Time Activities: Box Play

Toddlers love box play!

Why are you sitting in a box?
They just might be sitting inside one, or pushing it along, maybe wearing it on their head, or stacking them high and then pushing them over.

In the Tots' Time class the teacher read the book Not a Box, by Antoinette Portis, to the class. It is about a rabbit who uses his imagination to create all kinds of pretend uses for his box.

The tots used boxes in the classroom for golf ball and marble painting. They placed black paper into the box, added some paint colours, many golf balls and marbles, then closed the lid and SHOOK and TIPPED the box. The tots had fun peeking inside to see what was happening.

The class also played a game of hidden shapes, calling out each shape as each was found inside the box. After finding a shape and taking it out of the box, we either sang a song about its colour, counted them or placed them back into the puzzle where they came from.

Tots' Time at Olivet School is a special Monday morning program for children aged 16 months to 3 years and their parent, led by one of our E.C.E's. It is a valuable way for parents themselves to make social connections as their toddlers learn to follow teacher instructions, work as a group and experience educational play.

Parents, students and Olivet School teachers love the Olivet School community for its caring, home-like quality, very small class sizes and its rich academic program taught with a foundation in Christian values. If you have been looking for elementary education which combines the strength of top quality teaching with the individual attention and opportunities of a personalized learning community, then you too will love Olivet School. We Found a Snake!

The students found a garter snake in the field by the school. They were playing in the trees when one of the students came shrieking out with excitement. The snake had loitered into their fortress! The snake was eagerly shown around to the other students before being released back into the field.

Taking soil samples at school

Soil samples are being taken around the school this week and the kids are enjoying being able to watch these mighty machines at work. They were so interested in fact that the engineer in charge of the job offered to speak to the students in KG to Grade 6 and answer any questions they might have about what they have seen the crew doing. It was a learning experience for all!

The Junior Room students watch as the drilling machine is being prepped for boring the first hole.

The first drill piece is put in place.

The first step is for the machine to dig past the asphalt so that is can get to the soil to collect samples.

The engineer speaking to the students about the job.

The engineer drew a diagram showing the different components of the job. The picture of the far left shows the soil composition from the first sample set they took. The picture at the top of the page is a cross cut diagram of the building and what they think is under the foundation. The bottom picture is a top view of the school showing all the different areas the machines will be taking samples. The last picture on the right is the drilling machine, showing how is sends its drill 15 feet into the ground and collects samples as it goes.

The students enjoyed his talk and gave him a round of applause when he had finished.

Mississauga Marafun Marathon

Olivet School participated for the second time in the 2km Mississauga Marafun Marathon on Sunday. The students have been running during recess and gym class. All runners were required to run 40km before participating in the marathon, so that they would have ran 42km by the end of the race, just like a real marathon!
Many students, parents and even teachers ran in the marathon. Our Pricipal, Mr. Smith, managed to survive the race but was hobbling around on Monday morning. He never did catch up with the speedy grade 5 students though. Parents, students and past students joined in and afterwards and enjoyed a picnic in the beautiful May weather.

He Is Risen!

The grades 3 and 4 created an Easter diorama, depicting the when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb and found the angel who told them that Jesus had risen.

From NKJV Matthew 28:1-8
28 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door,[a] and sat on it. 3

His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.

5 But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”
8 So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.

Jillian Jiggs to the Rescue

The Kindergarten students performed the play "Jillian Jiggs to the Rescue," before the break. The play was adapted by their teacher Mrs. Gatti, from the original story written by Phoebe Gilman.
The Students had a lot of fun creating the props (especially the monster machine) and performing the play for their parents and the rest of the school. The video of this play will be included in the school performance DVD that is sent out at the end of the school year.
In the play Jillian Jiggs is trying to catch the monster who is giving her little sister Rebecca nightmares, With the help of their friends, they create a monster machine! If you missed the show, read Phoebe Gilman's book to find out what happened!

In this picture, the true identity of the "monster" is revealed.

At the end of the performance, the students were each asked what their favourite part of the play was.
The play was fun to watch, and we are already looking forward to seeing the next one!

Stone Carving

On February 19, Sandy Cline came to Olivet School to teach the students in grades 3-6 how to sculpt stone.  In the picture above, the students are working on a piece of pre-cut stone.
Each student starts out with a roughly cut piece of stone. They have to file, shape, sand, and smooth it to look like the loon above.
This sculpture was created by Sandy Cline and is named "Dinner and Dance".
Sandy Cline and his wife Rita pose with Sandy's sculpture "Dinner and Dance".
Sandy Cline uses the sharp saw to further shape the beak, which must then be filed and sanded into shape.
Some of the students got dusty!
The students polish and wash the carvings in water to remove excess dust. The carvings are also sanded in the water with fine sandpaper.
The carvings are heated before beeswax is melted onto them.
The wax being melted on the carvings.
The wax has to be cooled in water and the wax is buffed to a shine.
The students were very happy with the end result!
