Abstract Seascapes

The grades 3 and 4 have created abstract seascapes using tape and acrylic paint. The results are quite lovely! Art classes are an important part of the curriculum because it teaches students to experiment with materials, express themselves, clean up after themselves, reflect on their work, appreciate beauty and see another point of view, just to mention a few.

Fieldtrip to Hindu Temple

 

The field trip to the Hindu temple, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, was an amazing experience. The magnificent hand-carved stone building was just breathtaking! Though we saw many different statues of deities, we've learned that they are the various forms of manifestation of one supreme god, Parabrahman. We also enjoyed the heritage exhibition at the museum in the mansion. 

Dinosaur Projects

The grades three and four are busy with the last stages of their dinosaur projects. The enthusiasm for this topic is contagious and the work is turning out well! 

 It has not only been a great opportunity of learning more about dinosaurs, but it has also been an excellent learning experience for the students on how to search for pertinent information and how to incorporate it into their projects.

Decorating Easter Eggs

The playschool students used shaving cream and food colouring to decorate their Easter eggs in an interesting way.

 

 Food colouring was added to the shaving cream and then the students would mix it together with their fingers and roll their eggs in it to give them an interesting look.

The students especially enjoyed squishing the foam in their fingers.

Take a look at the finished product. The eggs were left with the shaving cream on them overnight. Any mountainous amounts of shaving cream should be wiped off to allow them to dry.

Playschool Drums

The afternoon playschool students decorated their very own drums and made jingly bell bracelets. Then they listened to a special story in circle with Ms. Williams that told them when to thump their drums and jingle their bells. The students enjoyed he story.

Oil and Water

 

In their study of buoyancy, the students in grades 3 and 4 were learning about how oil and water do not mix. In a real life application we had a look at the results of the Exxon Valdez and the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spills. (We used Google image photos and watched videos on YouTube.) With a bin of water, some oil (not crude oil), rocks, and popsicle sticks, the children tried to 'save' the  plastic animals.

TTC Fieldtrip

While learning about transportation the Kindergarten Class took a trip on the TTC to see first-hand how the bus and subway work in Toronto. The students had a tremendous time on the bus and subway. A great big thank you goes out to our parent chaperones who joined in on the adventure. 

World Sledge Hockey Challenge







Last Thursday the Grades 3 through 6 went to the MasterCard Centre to watch the World Sledge Hockey Challenge semifianal game between Russia and USA. It was a great experience for our students to see how people with tremendous challenges are able with amazing effort to overcome them. These teams will travel on to Sochi to participate in the Paralympic games this winter.
