Battle of Jericho

Armed Guard

Yesterday the students in Grades 3 and 4 acted out the story of the Battle of Jericho from Joshua 6. They dressed up as priests and armed guards and were delighted with their costumes and props.

The priests carried an “ark” and marched with the armed guards around the city 6 times to represent the 6 days that the Israelites marched around the city once each day, keeping complete silence as they did so.

Rev. Bus played a recording of rams' horns being blown (since no once could produce any sound out of the replica ram's horn that had been brought in).

Then the students took a quick “break” at the Israelite camp before marching around the walls 7 times on the  seventh day. 

The city has fallen

On the last lap around the walls the students each picked up a string that was attached to the city’s walls and gave a loud cry before tearing the city down.

The kids had a great time acting out this story in a memorable way that is sure to stick with them for many years to come!

Buoyancy

The grade 3's and 4's spent the afternoon applying their knowledge of floating and sinking to making boats that were to hold the maximum numbers of pennies. 

 After the first try, our students went back to the drawing board to see if they could improve their designs. 

 One boat even held 58 pennies! 

 These kids sure do know about buoyancy and displacement!

We Found a Snake!

The students found a garter snake in the field by the school. They were playing in the trees when one of the students came shrieking out with excitement. The snake had loitered into their fortress! The snake was eagerly shown around to the other students before being released back into the field.

Mississauga Marafun Marathon

Olivet School participated for the second time in the 2km Mississauga Marafun Marathon on Sunday. The students have been running during recess and gym class. All runners were required to run 40km before participating in the marathon, so that they would have ran 42km by the end of the race, just like a real marathon!

Many students, parents and even teachers ran in the marathon. Our Pricipal, Mr. Smith, managed to survive the race but was hobbling around on Monday morning. He never did catch up with the speedy grade 5 students though. Parents, students and past students joined in and afterwards and enjoyed a picnic in the beautiful May weather.

Earth Day 2013

Olivet School celebrated Earth Day yesterday!

The students collected litter around the school and in the hydro field. The Kindergarteners were partnered up. One student was in charge of collecting recyclable items and the other collecting non-recyclable items.

Jillian Jiggs to the Rescue

The Kindergarten students performed the play "Jillian Jiggs to the Rescue," before the break. The play was adapted by their teacher Mrs. Gatti, from the original story written by Phoebe Gilman.

The Students had a lot of fun creating the props (especially the monster machine) and performing the play for their parents and the rest of the school. The video of this play will be included in the school performance DVD that is sent out at the end of the school year.

In the play Jillian Jiggs is trying to catch the monster who is giving her little sister Rebecca nightmares, With the help of their friends, they create a monster machine! If you missed the show, read Phoebe Gilman's book to find out what happened!

At the end of the performance, the students were each asked what their favourite part of the play was.

The play was fun to watch, and we are already looking forward to seeing the next one!

Operation Christmas Child

We donated 39 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes!! Woohoo!! Many thanks to all at Olivet, teachers and families, for their generous support of Operation Christmas Child!

 

Each classroom collected donations for their students’ age group and organized the donations into individual shoeboxes.

 

 

 

The older students helped load up the van with shoe boxes and unload at St. Andrews.  The students enjoyed their time there and got a little better idea of the scope of this project.

 

Open House

 

You can drop in to visit the Grade 1-6 classes from 9am to 12pm this week.  Please make an appointment with Sandy if you would like to visit the Kindergarten Class. You can take this opportunity to visit the classroom your child will enter next year.

 

We're promoting Wednesday, November 21^st to the public as an open house day when people can come by during the morning or evening to get to know Olivet. Please invite your friends and neighbours; we have plenty of open house invite cards and brochures. Inviting them to our Facebook page is another great way to get the word out. 

Being Thankful

The Kindergarten students are getting ready for Thanksgiving. In preparation they chose what they are most thankful for in the classroom.

Baking Sweet Treats

The Playschool had a Bakery Learning Center so all of our friends could make sweet treats for each other.

The Playschool Bakery had kitchen tools,

 baked goods,

 ingredients,

oven, fridge, and microwave.

You cannot bake without doing the dishes afterwards!

Indoor Recess

Do you ever wonder what the children do at recess when it is too wet to go outside?

 On rainy days the students enjoy scooter board fun in the hall during indoor recess!
