Playschool Olympics

As the Sochi Winter Olympics have come to a close, so have the Playschool 2014 Olympics. Yesterday they held their opening ceremonies and sang an enthusiastic rendition of "O'Canada" to kick off the start of the games. The participating Olympians each marched in the ceremony with their torch and their very own coloured-in flag.

Their Olympic Games featured hockey, speed skating, skeleton, luge and curling. The Olympians celebrated all their victories and losses with equal enthusiasm and all the Olympians were decorated with medals. Congratulations Olympians!

Skating

For PE the students in grades 1 through 6 have been going skating. This week I was lucky enough to join them. After a nice walk to the rink and the rigmarole of putting on and lacing numerous skates, the students were ready to skate.
Some of the students practice their new found skating abilities and practice keeping their balance with the help of the teachers.

For fun, this week the some of the kids brought hockey sticks and pucks and we went through a few basic hockey drills. The compact layer of snow on top of the ice made the skills more challenging but the kids rose to the challenge and seemed to enjoy it.  Of course after practicing the hockey drills the students were already to play a game of shinny!

Oil and Water

In their study of buoyancy, the students in grades 3 and 4 were learning about how oil and water do not mix. In a real life application we had a look at the results of the Exxon Valdez and the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spills. (We used Google image photos and watched videos on YouTube.) With a bin of water, some oil (not crude oil), rocks, and popsicle sticks, the children tried to 'save' the  plastic animals.

TTC Fieldtrip

While learning about transportation the Kindergarten Class took a trip on the TTC to see first-hand how the bus and subway work in Toronto. The students had a tremendous time on the bus and subway. A great big thank you goes out to our parent chaperones who joined in on the adventure.
