Wizards of Olivet

There were so many fun activities happening today that I couldn't limit myself to just one post. [I should note that the Grade Three classroom was positively bustling with projects of their own but I'm reserving more information about them until they are finished so that I can post pictures of their work.] Here we have a picture of the Primary Room students hard at work creating their own set of Wizard of Oz characters. They have spent the last several weeks reading the book and watching the movie and now they get to put all that knowledge to creative use!

Snow Dancing

Spring may be some weeks away but that doesn't stop our playschool from frolicking and dancing in the snow while waving colourful, springlike toys. The combination of happy, joyful faces, bright winterwear, and lovely, cheery ribbons on the backdrop of clean white snow was lots of fun to watch!

Fond Farewell

Over the last two months, we have been blessed with the addition of a very special young lady in our Grade Three. Today was her last day with us for this year as she is returning to her home in South Korea. We hope to see her again next year! She has been a wonderful member of our school and we will miss her very much. Grade Three had a little send-off party for her this afternoon and we hope that she carries with her fond memories of her time at Olivet New Church School.

"P" Week = Pyjama Day!

In celebration of learning all about the letter "P" this week, the Kindergarten was allowed to wear pyjamas to school today. They are clearly enjoying the opportunity. We even let Mrs. Gatti join in the fun!

Love Your Neighbor

Valentine's Day provides a great opportunity for us to spend some time thinking about the importance of loving our neighbor. The Lord wants us to show mercy, compassion and care for our fellow human beings and Olivet New Church School tries very hard to encourage a life according to these important concepts.

As an example of how we can blend secular "Hallmark" events with important spiritual concepts, Mrs. Gatti and the Kindergarten class have planted a Heart Tree in their classroom. Children can offer appropriate and relevant ways of showing love to the neighbor by writing their ideas on paper hearts which are then placed on the Heart Tree. You can see below that their tree is really starting to bloom with great suggestions!

Broader Horizons Sunsets

Broader Horizons is the name of the after-school program offered at Olivet New Church School. This year we are once again grateful for the direction and wonderful creativity of Mrs. Reid as she helps the students learn about many different crafts. One of the recent projects involved painting a silhouette and sunset on a rock in such a way that incorporated the natural geography present in the "canvas." Here are some of the resulting masterpieces which I think are simply fantastic.

No Snow Day = Outdoor Gym Class

Some of you locals may have noticed how much snow came down today (again). Of course we didn't have a snow day, but we did have a lot of fun. In addition to our regular recess times outside, grades one through three were able to spend gym class making snow forts!

Our Winter Wonderland

Today is the first school day of February. While winter continues to work icy magic outside, the students in the Primary Room have been working on various cross-curricular projects putting together their own "Winter Wonderland."
